The instruments can be either factory-made or hand-made and an intermediate grade exists of factory-made and hand-finished.
Those who hand-make fretted stringed instruments are known as Luthiers
Instruments are still made today by factories and luthiers, but many vintage instruments are also available from the golden era of mandolins and banjos.
